# Switching AI assistants: how do I take my history with me?

What moves between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini as of October 2026, where to export from each one, how to bring across only what is still true, and a cancel-day checklist for closing the old account properly.

Guides · v1.0 · draft · https://hayzlabs.com/guides/switch-assistants-take-your-history/

In short:
- Gemini can import your memories and full chat history. Claude imports memories only, through a copy-and-paste prompt, not old chats.
- Export first and check the ZIP opens. Then import a short, reviewed list of what the old assistant knew, not everything it ever saved.
- On cancel day, cancel billing where you pay, delete the old account if you want, and write down the date.

## Short answer

Before you cancel anything, export your data from the old assistant and check that the file opens. As of October 2026, Gemini can import both your memories and your full chat history from ChatGPT or Claude, but only for personal Google accounts, for people 18 and over, and not in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK. Claude can import memories (the facts an assistant saves about you between chats) from another assistant through a copy-and-paste prompt, but it does not import old chats. The ChatGPT help pages we read describe exporting, not importing. Bring across a short list you have checked, not everything, then cancel billing where you pay and close the old account.

**Who this is for.** Anyone moving between ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. It takes about an hour spread over a day or two, because exports take time to arrive (our estimate).

## What moves, and what doesn't (as of October 2026)

| Into | Memories | Old chats | How |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini | Yes | Yes, from a ChatGPT or Claude export ZIP | Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini ([Google help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16868299), vendor help) |
| Claude | Yes | No | Settings > Memory > Start import, then paste ([Anthropic help](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587), vendor help) |
| ChatGPT | None found on the help pages we read | No | Paste a summary into a new chat or project yourself (our suggestion) |

**Gemini's limits.** Google's help page says chat imports must be a .zip file, "The file size limit is 5 GB", and you can upload up to 5 files a day. Work, school and supervised accounts can't use it, and it doesn't work in Gemini in Google Messages, Gemini in Chrome or Gemini on Android XR ([Google help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16868299), vendor help). The page doesn't say whether images or files you made in the old app come across, so assume they don't and save any you want by hand.

**Claude's limits.** Anthropic's help page says memory import works on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans on the web and Claude Desktop. Claude "will extract key information and store it as individual memory entries", "may not retain imported personal details unrelated to work", and the feature is "experimental and still in active development" ([Anthropic help](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587), vendor help).

Whatever doesn't move by itself (custom assistants, project instructions, connectors and favourite prompts) you copy into a text file. A file you own is worth more than a dump of every chat.

## Step 1. List what lives only in the old tool

Open the old assistant and note down, in one text file:

- **Memories.** What it has saved about you. Run [AI memory: what it keeps, and a ten-minute audit](https://hayzlabs.com/guides/ai-memory-audit/) first, so you move only what is true and wanted.
- **Chats you'd miss.** Usually a handful. Copy the useful answer itself into your file, not the whole chat.
- **Projects and custom assistants.** Copy their instructions and list the files you uploaded to them.
- **Connectors** (links to your email, calendar or drive). Write down which ones are on, so you can turn them off later.
- **Images and files** the assistant made for you. Download the ones you want.

## Step 2. Export from the old assistant

All three send you a download link and say it can take a while. Check the dates and steps again before you start: these are as of October 2026.

| From | Where to click | What arrives |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Profile menu > Settings > Data controls > Export data > Export, then confirm | A ZIP with "your chat history and other relevant account data", by email or text. It can take up to 7 days, and the link "expires 24 hours after you receive it" ([OpenAI help](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999), vendor help) |
| Claude | Settings > Privacy > Export data, on the web or desktop app (not the phone apps) | An email link that expires after 24 hours. Team and Enterprise members can export only if an owner allows it ([Anthropic help](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/9450526), vendor help) |
| Gemini | takeout.google.com > Deselect all > tick "Gemini" for Gems, and under "My Activity" choose only "Gemini Apps" for chats, generated media and uploads > Next step > Create export | A .zip or .tgz archive. It "can take a few hours to a few days", and an email link stays active for 7 days ([Google help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16920332), vendor help) |

None of these export pages says that saved memories are in the download. To keep your memories, ask the assistant to list them (Step 3) and save the answer in your file. Anthropic's page suggests asking Claude: "Write out your memories of me verbatim, exactly as they appear in your memory" ([Anthropic help](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/12123587), vendor help).

When the file arrives, download it the same day, open it and check that your chats are there. Then keep a copy somewhere you control. Don't upload the whole export into a new chat to "summarise it": it holds everything you ever typed ([What not to paste](https://hayzlabs.com/start/what-not-to-paste/)).

**If you live in the UK or EU.** The law gives you a right to get data you provided in "a commonly used and machine-readable format", and the organisation "has one month to respond to your request" ([ICO, your right to data portability](https://ico.org.uk/for-the-public/your-right-to-data-portability/), regulator guidance; the ICO says this guidance is under review). The export buttons above are usually the quicker route.

## Step 3. Bring in a short, checked summary

Both import tools give you their own prompt to run in the old assistant. Use theirs. If you're moving to ChatGPT, or want to see the list before anything is imported, this prompt is our suggestion:

```text title="Memory handover · v1.0"
List everything you have saved or remember about me across our chats:
facts about me, my preferences, my work, and ongoing projects.
Put each item on its own line, starting with a dash.
After each item, add in brackets where it came from and roughly when, if you know.
Do not include anything you are unsure about. Do not add advice.
Put the whole list in one code block.
```

Then edit the list before you paste it anywhere:

- Delete anything out of date, wrong, or that you'd rather a company didn't hold, such as health, money or other people's details.
- Keep preferences that save you time, such as "write in British English" or "I'm a nurse on night shifts".
- Paste it into the new assistant's import box. For ChatGPT, paste it into a project's instructions or a new chat and ask it to remember the items you want (our suggestion).

Import chat history into Gemini only if you really go back to old chats. If you do, Google says re-uploading the same ZIP adds new chats and overwrites earlier imports of the same ones, and you can delete an import as a whole ([Google help](https://support.google.com/gemini/answer/16868299), vendor help).

## Step 4. Check what came across

A day later, ask the new assistant: "What do you know about me?" Compare the answer with your edited list. Fix or delete anything wrong on its memory settings page, then run the [Privacy settings pass](https://hayzlabs.com/setup/privacy-settings-pass/) on the new account, because training and memory settings start at the maker's defaults, not your old choices.

## Cancel-day checklist

> [!OUR RULE]
> Don't delete the old account until you've opened the export, saved it in two places and checked the new assistant. The steps are drawn from the vendors' help pages; the order is ours.

1. **Export opened and saved** in two places you control.
2. **Memory list saved** in your own text file.
3. **Connectors off.** Turn off email, calendar and drive links in the old assistant, and, our suggestion, remove its access in your Google or Microsoft account settings too.
4. **Billing cancelled where you pay.** For ChatGPT on the web it's Settings > Billing > Cancel. If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, cancel there: OpenAI says "Uninstalling the app also does not cancel a subscription", and to avoid the next charge cancel at least 24 hours before your billing date ([OpenAI help, cancelling](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7232927-how-do-i-cancel-my-chatgpt-plus-subscription), vendor help).
5. **Delete the account if you want** your data gone. For ChatGPT it's Settings > Account > Delete. OpenAI says this "is permanent", that it will "delete your data within 30 days" with some legal and security exceptions, and that it does not cancel an Apple subscription. You can reuse the same email after 30 days ([OpenAI help, deleting](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/6378407-deleting-your-chatgpt-account), vendor help).
6. **Write down the date** you cancelled and deleted, and keep any confirmation email.

> [!CHECK]
> It worked if the export opens and shows your chats, the new assistant's answer to "What do you know about me?" matches your edited list, and the old service shows no next billing date.

## Limits

> [!LIMIT]
> Menus, limits and who can use each import tool are as of 19 October 2026 and change often, so check the linked help pages before you start. We haven't run these imports or exports ourselves; every step comes from the vendors' help pages. Copilot, Grok, Perplexity and other assistants aren't covered here. The help pages don't say whether memories or images are inside the export files, so this page doesn't say either. Business and school accounts have their own rules: ask your administrator.
