Best for research and long documents

Picked one? Research with AI and keep the sources shows how to get good results from it.

0 to 100
Our score for one job, like writing or coding, compared with everything else out today. 100 is the best available today. For AI models we build it from public data, such as Arena's blind votes and Epoch AI's independent tests; apps and tools are scored on our own checklist. The same tool can score differently for different jobs, and where two likely ranges overlap, we call it a tie.
Our verdict
Use it: a top choice for most people. Worth trying: good, and worth a go. Depends: good for some people or one kind of job. Wait: too early to tell, or not out for everyone yet. Skip: something else does the job better.
First look
Just released. We say what it is and whether to bother, and give it a score once public results exist.
No score yet
None of the public sources we use covers it yet, or the only evidence is from a source whose numbers we can't use, so we describe it in words instead.
Best buy
Nothing cheaper scores as well for that job.
Best free
The best score for that job that costs nothing, through a free plan or by running on your own computer.
Pay as you go
No monthly plan: you pay for each use, usually through a developer account.
Checked
The day we last confirmed the score and the price against the sources. Prices change often, so check the date.
AI model
The engine underneath, like GPT or Claude. You use it through an app or, if you code, directly.
Open source
Free to download and run on your own computer, so nothing leaves your machine.
How we score, in full

The short answer

For hard questions and long documents, Claude Opus 5.5 (97), Gemini 4 Argon (97) and Claude Sonnet 5.5 (96) score highest of the models we review on Arena's Expert board, with ranges that overlap, so treat them as tied.

Argon is the cheapest way in, with Google AI Plus at $4.99/month, though its votes are still early. From other makers, MiMo-V2.6-Pro scores 94 at $0.13 per Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index task, with free MIT weights that are sized for a GPU cluster rather than a home computer, and GPT-6.1 Sol scores 91 at $0.72 per index task at max effort, against $5.46 for Sonnet 5.5 at max. The free Claude plan, scored on our checklist, gets 80 at $0. We would not pay for Claude Fable 5.1 (93) or GPT-6 Astra (89) for this job: both cost $10 / $50 per 1M input / output tokens and score no higher than cheaper models. To watch: Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) is free for answering from your own files but not scored yet.

What changed

New leaders and rating changes in research; our working is under Details. All news

  1. Worse: Claude Fable 5.1: research rating moved down.
    Details

New tie rule: models tied on the Artificial Analysis index take the lowest rank in the tie, so research is rated on that.
