0 to 100
Our score for one job, like writing or coding, compared with everything else out today. 100 is the best available today. For AI models we build it from public data, such as Arena's blind votes and Epoch AI's independent tests; apps and tools are scored on our own checklist. The same tool can score differently for different jobs, and where two likely ranges overlap, we call it a tie.
Our verdict
Use it: a top choice for most people. Worth trying: good, and worth a go. Depends: good for some people or one kind of job. Wait: too early to tell, or not out for everyone yet. Skip: something else does the job better.
First look
Just released. We say what it is and whether to bother, and give it a score once public results exist.
No score yet
None of the public sources we use covers it yet, or the only evidence is from a source whose numbers we can't use, so we describe it in words instead.
Best buy
Nothing cheaper scores as well for that job.
Best free
The best score for that job that costs nothing, through a free plan or by running on your own computer.
Pay as you go
No monthly plan: you pay for each use, usually through a developer account.
Checked
The day we last confirmed the score and the price against the sources. Prices change often, so check the date.
AI model
The engine underneath, like GPT or Claude. You use it through an app or, if you code, directly.
Open source
Free to download and run on your own computer, so nothing leaves your machine.
How we score, in full

The short answer

For coding, Claude Opus 5.5 leads Arena's WebDev board and scores 100, ahead of GPT-6 Astra at 90, and Opus 5.5 costs $4 / $20 per 1M input / output tokens against $10 / $50 for Astra, so we would not pay Astra's price.

Better value sits one step down: Claude Sonnet 5.5 scores 89, a range that overlaps Astra's, and GPT-6.1 Sol scores 85, both at $2 / $10. GPT-6.1 Sol costs less per Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index task: $0.72 at max effort, against $2.01 for Sonnet 5.5 at xhigh. For free use, the Claude app's free plan scores 80 on our checklist. Claude Fable 5.1 (82, $10 / $50) is not worth paying for here, since cheaper models score as high or higher. For the coding tools that run these models, Artificial Analysis's Coding Agent Index now gives a dated, independent test. Claude Code has the highest published score there but costs about $13 per task with Opus 5.5; OpenAI's Codex CLI scores close behind for about $1 per task, so it is where we would start. Both score 70 on our checklist. OpenCode, free and open source, scores 80 because it costs nothing and stores no code, though it scored lower with the model tested. GitHub Copilot ($10/month) and Cursor stay First looks until a fresh independent test covers them.

What changed

New leaders and rating changes in coding; our working is under Details. All news

  1. Worse: ChatGPT (GPT-6): coding rating moved down.
    Details

Audit under our rule that each plan is rated on the best model it includes: OpenAI names GPT-6 Sol for Plus chat and GPT-6 Luna for Free, so both checklist lines now use those models instead of the best model in Plus. Coding fell because GPT-6 Sol ranks lower after the Text Coding check, so Free now scores higher. Research and writing keep their ratings but now come from Free. Dropped the Meta Muse test and Instruction Following board, and stopped counting the 24 Sep Tom's Guide test, which did not name the ChatGPT-6 version.

  2. Better: ChatGPT (GPT-6): coding rating moved up.
    Details

Rule change: each plan is scored on the best model it lets you choose. OpenAI's help page says Plus includes GPT-6 Astra in ChatGPT Work and Codex, while Plus chat offers only GPT-6 Sol. Agents and coding on Plus are now rated on Astra, so coding returns to 7/10. Research and writing stay on chat models, so they are unchanged. Arena text URLs moved to the /leaderboard/chat/text/ form.

  3. Worse: Claude Sonnet 5.5: coding rating moved down.
    Details

Audit: re-derived the ratings with our rule of counting each model once on a leaderboard. Coding moved down a step (Text Coding is 16th of distinct models, below its WebDev rank). Writing moved up a step (Instruction Following is 10th of distinct models). best_category now agents. Agent cost relabelled as the 14-day median; PCWorld cited for the free-plan model.
