The short version

What this is
xAI's flagship model for coding and knowledge work, released 21 Sep 2026, in Grok, Cursor and the xAI API.
Why it matters
It is a big-name launch, but on public boards it trails cheaper models, so most people can pass on it.
  • Rank 15 on arena.ai WebDev and 21 on the Agent board; rank 74 on Creative Writing s3 s1 s5.
  • About $3.74 per Artificial Analysis index task at xhigh, against $0.72 for GPT-6.1 Sol s2.
  • API $2 / $6 per 1M tokens s8; xAI's $30/month Premium plan promises the latest Grok models but names none s7.

Good at

  • Rank 15 on arena.ai WebDev s3.
  • Rank 7 of 27 on the arena.ai Agent Alignment Index, ahead of Gemini 4 Argon and Claude Sonnet 5.5 s11.
  • Low output price per token: $6 per 1M s8.

Weak at

  • Writing: rank 74 on arena.ai Creative Writing s5.
  • Costly per task despite low token prices: $3.74 per index task at xhigh, about five times GPT-6.1 Sol s2.
  • Rank 90 on arena.ai Text Coding, well below its WebDev rank s4.

Our take

Grok 4.7 is a capable model that doesn't stand out on price or quality. On 11 Oct 2026 it ranks 15th on arena.ai WebDev and 21st on the Agent board s3 s1; on the Artificial Analysis index it is 9th of distinct models s2. Its writing ranks are low s5 s6.

The low token price is misleading. At xhigh effort it costs about $3.74 per Artificial Analysis index task, around five times GPT-6.1 Sol, which scores higher s2. On the arena.ai Agent board it costs $1.83 a task against $0.58 for GPT-6.1 Sol, median s1. xAI says it is its "most powerful model for coding and knowledge work" s9; the public boards put several cheaper models above it.

Scores by job

A score from 0 to 100 per job, against everything available today. Overall 64 across 2 jobs, the average of the job scores.

New to this? What the scores and labels mean
0 to 100
Our score for one job, like writing or coding, compared with everything else out today. 100 is the best available today. For AI models we build it from public data, such as Arena's blind votes and Epoch AI's independent tests; apps and tools are scored on our own checklist. The same tool can score differently for different jobs, and where two likely ranges overlap, we call it a tie.
Our verdict
Use it: a top choice for most people. Worth trying: good, and worth a go. Depends: good for some people or one kind of job. Wait: too early to tell, or not out for everyone yet. Skip: something else does the job better.
First look
Just released. We say what it is and whether to bother, and give it a score once public results exist.
No score yet
None of the public sources we use covers it yet, or the only evidence is from a source whose numbers we can't use, so we describe it in words instead.
Best buy
Nothing cheaper scores as well for that job.
Best free
The best score for that job that costs nothing, through a free plan or by running on your own computer.
Pay as you go
No monthly plan: you pay for each use, usually through a developer account.
Checked
The day we last confirmed the score and the price against the sources. Prices change often, so check the date.
AI model
The engine underneath, like GPT or Claude. You use it through an app or, if you code, directly.

How we scored this

The writing and coding scores are our own, built from public data: blind votes on Arena and, where they cover the job, Epoch AI's independent tests. How we combine them is our method and we don't publish it. For agents, Arena's blind votes give a rank but no rating, so we show the rank and no score yet.

History 5 changes

Every change to a rating, the price or our call, with the reason. Scores are against what exists on the day, so they drift down as better things ship. Older entries come from before we moved to scores.

  1. Plans: xAI's pricing page no longer names a model on any plan (its plans are now Free, Plus, Premium, Super and Ultra), so we no longer say SuperGrok lists Grok 4.7.
  2. New: Agents ratedNew: Coding ratedNew: Writing ratedReviewed: agents, coding, writing.
  3. Audit: arena.ai Agent median cost corrected from $1.85 to $1.83, with GPT-6.1 Sol $0.58 and Muse Spark 1.3 $0.52 from the same median column; Text Coding rank corrected from 89 to 90 of 409 on the live board. Ratings re-derived, unchanged.
  4. Audit: applied our tie rule to the Artificial Analysis rank, now 9th instead of 8th (tied with MiMo-V2.6-Pro at 46). Still the same, so agents stays the same.
  5. Text Coding rank updated from 90 to 89 on the live board; same band, no rating change.
