Do I need to pay for AI, and for which plan?

When a free plan is enough, when one paid plan is worth about $20 a month, how to pick that one plan, and a two to four week test before and after you pay.

What this is
How to decide whether the free version of an AI assistant is enough for you, or whether a monthly paid plan is worth it.
Why it matters
You avoid paying for a plan you rarely use, or for two plans that do the same job.
The short version
  • Stay free until you hit the free limit more than once a week for three weeks, or need a feature only a paid plan has.
  • Pay for one general plan at a time: the one that did best on your own tasks in a two to four week test of free plans.
  • Pay monthly at first, and cancel if you use it less than once a week for a month.

The short answer

The rule of thumb and the thresholds below are our suggestion, not a vendor's.

  • Free is enough when you use AI a few times a week, rarely see a "limit reached" message, and none of your tasks needs a paid-only feature.
  • One paid plan is worth it when you hit the free limit more than once a week for three weeks running, or a task you do every week needs something only the paid plan has, such as a coding agent (an AI that writes and runs code for you).
  • The API (a way for your own program to send requests to the AI, paid per use) or a higher tier is worth it when you run the same task over hundreds of items from a script, a small program you write (see Your first API call, with a spending cap), or you hit the paid plan's limits more than once a week for three weeks.

Most people who are starting out need nothing beyond free plans.

Which one plan

The general plans sit at about the same price, so price rarely decides it.

PlanPrice a monthWorth knowing
ChatGPT Plus$20Monthly billing only. Includes Codex and Codex Cloud, its coding tools.
Claude Pro$20, or $17 billed yearly ($200 up front)Includes Claude Code, its coding tool. One usage pool across web, desktop, mobile and Claude Code.
Google AI Pro$19.99Bundles 5 TB of storage, so it does not compare one to one.
Microsoft 365 Premium$19.99Bundles the Office apps.

Cheaper options exist: ChatGPT Go is $8 in the US and may show ads, and Google AI Plus is $4.99 with twice the free usage.

Pick by these, in order:

  1. The one that did best on your own tasks in the test below. This matters more than any review.
  2. A feature you need every week. For example, Claude Pro includes Claude Code and the Claude free plan does not.
  3. Something you already pay for. If you would buy the storage or the Office apps anyway, a bundle can cost you less in total.

Pay for one general plan at a time. A second assistant for cross-checking can stay on its free plan. Each paid tool is another bill, another settings page and another privacy policy, so run the privacy settings pass on the one you choose.

A two to four week test before you pay

  1. Write down five tasks you really do each week (illustrative: summarise a long email thread, draft a reply to a complaint, plan meals from what is in the fridge). A personal eval set (your own list of test tasks) is the longer version of this.
  2. Run each task on the free plans of two assistants, with the setting that lets your chats train the AI checked first (What not to paste).
  3. Keep a tally: each time you hit a limit, which assistant, and which answer you would actually use.
  4. At the end, look at the tally. No regular limit hits means stay free. Regular hits on the assistant you prefer means that is the plan to pay for.

How to tell it worked

After a month on the paid plan, check three things:

  • You used it at least once a week.
  • The limit messages stopped.
  • Your five tasks are quicker or better than on the free plan. Am I actually faster? shows how to time it.

If you used it less than once a week for a month, cancel. Set a reminder a few days before it renews so the decision is yours, not the renewal date's. Paying monthly for the first month keeps this cheap to undo, since a yearly plan is paid up front.
